Red Dot stands for belonging to the best in design and business. Our international design competition, the “Red Dot Design Award”, is aimed at all those who would like to distinguish their business activities through design. The distinction is based on the principle of selection and presentation. Excellent design is selected by competent expert juries in the areas of product design, communication design, and design concepts.
The distinction “Red Dot” has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after seals of quality for good design. In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the award breaks down into three disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. Each competition is organised once every year.
PRODUCT DESIGN
The Red Dot Award: Product Design, whose origins date back to 1955, appraises the best products created every year. In roughly 50 categories, manufacturers and designers can enter their innovations in the competition. On Young Professionals Application Day, graduates of design courses who have obtained their academic qualifications within the past five years have the opportunity to take part in the draw for one of 50 free registration places. According to the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, the jury evaluates the entries and only awards a Red Dot to products that win them over with their high design quality.
Young Professionals Application Day
The Young Professionals Application Day takes place on 1 December 2021.
On this day, designers who have graduated within the past five years have the chance to apply for the draw of one of 50 free registration places. If they win an award, the emerging talents will benefit from extensive and free measures, all of which communicate their success in an internationally visible way.
BRANDS & COMMINICATION
The Red Dot: Best of the Best is awarded to works and brands that win over the jury with their very good design quality and creative performance. From these projects, the jury selects some that are put forward for the highest distinctions. While the Red Dot: Grand Prix goes to communication works that show exceptional creativity and design quality, the jury awards the distinction of “Red Dot: Brand of the Year” to the best brand in an industry with brand communication that portrays a consistent image across different channels.
In the spring of 2021, you will once again have the opportunity to register your best communication design works and brands in the international competition.

Early Bird: 22 March – 20 April 2021
Regular: 21 April – 8 June 2021
Latecomer: 9 – 25 June 2021
DESIGN CONCEPT
“It’s always a risk to launch a new product and every design process is full of risks.” said Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of Red Dot, “That’s why designers and companies should check their ideas before they invest into these ideas. I think a design concept award is the best situation and the best background to evaluate the concept.”
Rules
Any person may participate. Participation extends to all design studios, companies, universities, research laboratories, inventors, design students and design professionals from anywhere in the world. All kinds of inventions, novelty designs and aesthetic designs that are not in the market, not produced for sale, unexecuted communication projects whether client or non-client, before 2 June 2021 can be entered. All entered works must be the entrant’s own.
Early Submission
2 Jan to 9 Feb
You can submit your design concept to the award at a highly discounted fee. A one for one promotion also allows you to submit 2 entries together, and one of the entries will be free from submission fees. When you submit your design concept at this period, you have the advantage of prejudging.
Standard Submission
10 Feb – 24 Mar
You can submit your design concept to the award at the regular fee. A one for one promotion also allows you to submit 2 entries together, and one of the entries will be free from submission fees. When you submit your design concept at this period, you have the advantage of prejudging.
Late Submission
25 Mar – 17 May
Submit your design concept in English only.
Design concepts submitted during late submission period will proceed directly to final judging.
You may provide a video and/or a prototype/model to add to your entry. The video and prototype/model are optional. Prototypes/models for the competition will only be received between 10 May to 21 May.
